Myles Cheesman is a Lecturer in the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of East Anglia. He is a member of the Centre for Molecular and Structural Biochemistry and the Chemistry of Light and Energy research groups. His research focuses on using Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to study transition metal-containing proteins, particularly multiheme enzymes involved in redox reactions and global biogeochemical cycles.
Education: B.A. in Natural Sciences from University of Cambridge (1983), PhD in Metalloprotein Spectroscopy under Prof. Andrew Thomson at UEA (1980s). Postdoctoral work on heme-copper oxidases followed by senior roles in spectroscopy laboratories before faculty appointment in 2004.
Research Interests: Spectroscopic analysis of metalloproteins, enzyme catalysis mechanisms, nitric oxide reduction pathways, and bacterial metalloenzymes. Current emphasis on thiosulfate dehydrogenases and iron-sulfur clusters in regulatory proteins.
Funding: Major grants from BBSRC and EPSRC totaling over £4M, including studies on metalloprotein structure-function relationships, electrochemical spectroscopy techniques, and microbial electron transfer mechanisms. Recent projects include collaboration with Imperial College and Oxford on thiosulfate oxidation pathways.
Labs/Teams: Core member of the Centre for Metalloprotein Spectroscopy and Biology (CMSB), collaborates with Henry Wellcome Laboratories for Biological Chemistry and School of Biological Sciences. Supervises postdoctoral researchers and PhD students in spectroscopic methodologies and protein biochemistry.
