Matthew Gabel is a Professor of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis and holds affiliate roles at the Knight Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (Department of Neurology, School of Medicine), the Weidenbaum Center, the Institute for Public Health, and the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity. He also serves as an Associate Editor of European Union Politics. His research spans comparative politics, judicial behavior, European integration, public opinion dynamics, and health policy, with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease research participation and governance of international courts.
Dr. Gabel holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Rochester (1994) and advanced degrees from the College of Europe (1993) and Trinity University (1988). He has received significant grants from the National Science Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and others, totaling over $2 million in funding. His work has been recognized with awards including the European Union Studies Association’s Best Book Prize (2013-14) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2010-11).
Recent research emphasizes judicial institutional reforms at the European Court of Justice and barriers to participation in Alzheimer’s studies. He teaches courses on comparative politics, research design, and public policy analysis, with a regional focus on Europe. His interdisciplinary collaborations span law, public health, and social equity.
