Matthew Easterday is an Associate Professor in the Learning Sciences Department at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy (SESP), and an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research. He leads the Delta Lab, focusing on technology-driven solutions for civic engagement and policy problem-solving. His research emphasizes creating educational tools to foster informed citizens capable of addressing societal challenges like climate change and poverty.
Easterday holds a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University (2010), alongside an MS (2004) and BA (1999). His honors include the 2017 Northwestern Public Voices Fellowship and the 2015 Ver Steeg Advising Award. His work bridges cognitive science, educational technology, and policy analysis.
Research interests center on designing digital platforms for deliberation, civic education, and collective action. Recent projects include DeliberationWorks and V-FRAMER, tools to improve public policy discussions and mitigate reasoning errors. He explores how technology can scaffold critical thinking and collaboration in complex societal issues.
Publications span 20 years, focusing on iterative design, deliberative systems, and educational technology. His grants support innovations in participatory policy-making and mentorship in emerging fields. Easterday’s Delta Lab collaborates across disciplines to advance scalable, equitable solutions for civic and social challenges.
