Matthew E. Carnes, S.J., is a Professor of Political Science and Vice President for Mission and Ministry at Santa Clara University. He also serves as Executive Director of the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education. Previously, he was an Associate Professor at Georgetown University's Department of Government and Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, where he held roles including Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies.
His research focuses on labor and social welfare policy dynamics in developing and middle-income countries, particularly in Latin America. He has conducted fieldwork in Argentina, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Honduras, Mexico, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Ecuador. His notable work includes the book *Continuity Despite Change: The Politics of Labor Regulation in Latin America* (2014).
Dr. Carnes has received prestigious teaching awards from Georgetown University and was recognized nationally by the Princeton Review. He has held visiting roles at Campion Hall (Oxford University), the Kellogg Institute (Notre Dame), and the Hoover Institution (Stanford).
His academic contributions span comparative politics, Jesuit educational missions, and policy analysis. He actively bridges scholarly work with institutional leadership to advance Jesuit values in higher education.
