Diego Abente Brun is a full-time Professor of Practice of International Affairs at The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs, where he also serves as Director of the M.A. in Latin American and Hemispheric Studies Program and Associate Director of the International Affairs MA (MAIA) Program. He joined the Elliott School in July 2019 after a multifaceted career spanning academia, international organizations, and public service in Paraguay.
- Education: Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of New Mexico, mentored by distinguished Latin Americanists Martin C. Needler and Karen L. Remmer.
His research focuses on the intersection of geopolitics, geo-economics, and comparative democratization, particularly in Latin America. He has authored or edited over 30 books and published articles in journals like Latin American Research Review and Comparative Politics.
Scientific Awards:
- Kellogg Institute Fellow (twice).
He has held significant roles in Paraguay, including two-term Senator, Minister of Justice, and Ambassador. His professional experience also includes Deputy Director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies at the National Endowment for Democracy, OAS Resident Representative in Ecuador, and advisory roles at the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and Institute for Development Studies (Essex).
