Matthew Crowley

Matthew Crowley is a Senior Lecturer and Critical Practice Coordinator in the Textile Design department at Chelsea College of the Arts, part of the University of the Arts London. He previously held associate lecturer roles at the University of Brighton, Kingston University, and Goldsmiths, University of London. Alongside his academic work, he is an active screenwriter with scripts in development, a published prose fiction author, and collaborator with artists and photographers.

Education includes a PhD from the University of Brighton (2012–2018), an MA from Birkbeck, University of London (2009–2011), a BA (Hons) from University of the Arts London (2000–2004), and a PGCert in Higher Education from the same institution (2021–2022).

His research interests span cultural history, class dynamics, gender representation, creative writing (speculative fiction and poetry), radical pedagogies, and post-capitalist futures. With Sicgmone Kludje, he co-founded the Interventions initiative, which promotes equality, diversity, and inclusivity through design interventions for Chelsea College’s Design and Material Practices programme.

Outputs reflect interdisciplinary engagement, blending literary criticism with textile design and art. Recent works analyze working-class masculinities in British culture across media (literature, television, art), while earlier projects explore post-war narratives and globalized identity. He serves as a reviewer for International Journal of Fashion Studies and Journal of Bodies, Sexualities, and Masculinities.
