Matthew Coates, MD, PhD, is the Peter and Marshia Carlino Professor of Medicine and Professor of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics at the Penn State College of Medicine. He serves as Director of Research for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and oversees the Penn State Gastroenterology Data Registry and Biorepository. His research focuses on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), neuroendocrine signaling, and visceral pain mechanisms. He holds an NIH NIDDK R01 grant studying the role of NaV1.8 sodium channels in IBD pain perception. Dr. Coates earned his MD and PhD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, completed residency in Internal Medicine, and a T32 fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He joined Penn State in 2015.
