Matthew Coates, MD, PhD, is the Peter and Marshia Carlino Professor in the Department of Medicine and Director of Research in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also holds a professorship in the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics. His research focuses on the interplay between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and neuroendocrine signaling systems, particularly investigating intestinal serotonin, neurotrophic factors, and visceral sensation mechanisms. Dr. Coates leads a lab employing molecular techniques (e.g., genomics, immunohistochemistry) and functional assays (e.g., sensory testing) to study gastrointestinal pathophysiology.
- Education:
- Fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition: University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (2013)
- Residency in Internal Medicine: University of Vermont College of Medicine (2010)
- MD and PhD: University of Vermont College of Medicine (2007–2005)
- AB Degree: Princeton University (1996)
His research interests extend to developing a gastroenterology-based intestinal disease data registry and biorepository, enabling prospective studies on IBD and related disorders. Recent work explores sodium channel NaV1.8’s role in silent IBD and cannabinoid effects on visceral sensation.
Awards:
- Recipient of the 2020 Career Citation Milestone Award (500 Club).
Grants/Projects:
- Role of NaV1.8 in Silent IBD (NIH NIDDK, 2020–2024)
- Intestinal Serotonin Uptake in IBS (NIH NINDS, 2005–2006)
Dr. Coates collaborates internationally and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being (SDG 3) through his research.
