Matthew Clayton is a Professor of Political Theory at the University of Warwick, where he has been a member of the School of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) since 2002. Previously, he held positions at the University of Essex (Department of Philosophy and Human Rights Centre) and Brunel University (Department of Government). His research focuses on distributive justice, foundational liberal political thought, and applied philosophy, particularly in areas such as the philosophy of upbringing and education.
Key works include Independence for Children (2025), How to Think about Religious Schools (2024), and Justice and Legitimacy in Upbringing (2006). He has also contributed to edited volumes like The Ideal of Equality (2002) and Social Justice (2004).
His publications reflect a recurring engagement with questions of justice, moral development, and the ethical dimensions of education and parenting within liberal frameworks.
