معرفی
Dr. Matthew Brain is a Professor in the Department of Geography at Durham University, where he has held progressively senior academic positions since 2014. His career trajectory includes roles as Independent Research Fellow & Proleptic Lecturer (2014-2018), Assistant Professor (2018-2020), Associate Professor (2020-2024), and Professor (2024-present). He holds a BA(Hons)/MA in Geography from the University of Oxford and a PhD from Durham University focused on sediment autocompaction in intertidal environments.
Brain's research centers on geotechnical properties of earth materials, with emphasis on deformation processes, coastal geomorphology, and landslide dynamics. Key themes include:
- Laboratory and field-based analysis of rock and soil mechanics
- Coastal cliff erosion and rockfall prediction
- Landslide triggering mechanisms in seismic contexts
- Holocene sea-level reconstruction using sediment archives
- Geotechnical controls on sediment compaction
His publications demonstrate strong focus on coastal geohazards (rockfalls, landslides), sea-level change reconstruction techniques, and geomechanical responses to environmental stressors. Recent work emphasizes quantification of erosion processes using advanced monitoring (LiDAR, photogrammetry) and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
Brain currently supervises three postgraduate researchers: Ian Pawlby (PhD), Joshua Harley (MRes), and Sophie Kenmare (PhD).
