Matthew Bell is a Professor of German and Comparative Literature at King's College London, part of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford (1991) and a BA from Balliol College, Oxford (1987). His research focuses on 18th- and 19th-century German literature, Goethe studies, and the intersection of literature with psychology and classical antiquity. He co-founded the King's Comparative Literature Programme in 2002 and has served as its Director until 2011.
Research interests include the history of psychological thought, melancholy in literature, and the classical tradition's influence on German writers. Notable works include Melancholia: The Western Malady (2014) and The German Tradition of Psychology (2005). He has held roles in the English Goethe Society, including co-editing its journal PEGS from 2005–2012.
His recent publications explore legal cultures in Goethe's era and the economics of 18th-century authorship. Bell has received the PEGS Prize (2018) and leads projects funded by the AHRC and Leverhulme Trust. He advises PhD candidates on topics related to Enlightenment literature and the human sciences.
