Matthew Ashby is an Astronomer and current Chair of the Optical and Infrared Astronomy Division at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. His research focuses on infrared surveys, particularly galaxy evolution over cosmic time using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the SPHEREx mission (launching in 2025). He previously co-directed SAO's Astrophysics Research Experience for Undergraduates Site from 2016 to 2023.
- Infrared surveys
- Biogenic compounds in the Milky Way
- Star Formation Reference Survey (SFRS)
- Collaborations with Chandra, SPT, and SMA observatories
Dr. Ashby earned his PhD from Cornell University in 1995. His work spans extragalactic astronomy, astrochemistry, and interstellar medium studies, leveraging data from retired Spitzer and operational Chandra missions to map star formation and molecular distributions. He contributes to SPHEREx's infrared spectroscopic survey design while managing observational efforts for reference datasets.
