Professor Matteo Santin serves as Professor of Tissue Regeneration at the University of Brighton's School of Applied Sciences. He directs the Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices and acts as Academic Lead for Healthy Futures, one of the university's five cross-cutting research themes. With over 25 years of experience in biomaterials and tissue engineering, Santin has established himself as a leading figure in regenerative medicine research.
His educational background includes dual PhDs in Biomaterials and Biomedical Sciences. Santin began his research career at the University of Naples (1987-1990), followed by work at the Institute of Protein Biochemistry and Enzymology in Naples, Italy. He completed his first PhD in Biomaterials Science at the University of Brighton (1994-1996) under an EC fellowship, then earned a second PhD in Biomaterials at the University of Turin, Italy.
Professor Santin's research focuses on developing natural and synthetic biomimetic materials for tissue regeneration, including soybean-based biomaterials and hyperbranched polymers. His work spans bone and cartilage regeneration, cardiovascular devices, and controlling angiogenesis for various applications. He has pioneered in vitro models for biomaterial testing and stem cell spheroid formation, with significant contributions to wound healing technologies and diagnostic platforms.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on wound dressing technologies, particularly examining exudate absorption mechanisms, biomimetic hydrogels for disc regeneration, and personalized wound care solutions. His research increasingly integrates fluid dynamics with biomaterial design while expanding into space medicine applications through parabolic flight studies on limb perfusion.
- Jean Leary Award from the European Society for Biomaterials (2005)
- President of the European Society for Biomaterials (2013-2017)
- Emeritus Editor of the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine
- Member of UK All Party Parliamentary Group for Longevity scientific advisory committee (since 2019)
Professor Santin has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds including biology, biomedical science, engineering, and clinical disciplines. He has secured substantial funding through multiple projects including EPSRC, MRC, and Horizon 2020 grants, with recent funding exceeding £500,000 for his startup companies Brighton Wound Care Ltd and Tissue Click Ltd. His research portfolio includes eight active and completed projects focusing on tissue regeneration, wound healing diagnostics, and medical device innovation.
As leader of the Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices, Santin oversees a multidisciplinary team of over 30 staff members across University of Brighton campuses, along with numerous early-career researchers and postgraduate students. He has established the Healthy Futures Entrepreneurs' Network, connecting over 60 healthcare organizations in the Greater Brighton area, recognized by the Greater Brighton Economic Board and Brighton and Hove City Council.
