Dr. Matt Mears is a Senior Lecturer in Physics at the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, University of Sheffield. He specializes in physics education research, biophysics, and polymer science. His teaching responsibilities include leading modules PHY120 and PHY407, and supervising projects in PHY341. He is actively involved in educational innovation, laboratory coordination, and academic service roles such as Head of Second Year Lab and membership in the ShePHERD group.
Research interests span physics pedagogy, cellular adhesion mechanics, and polymer surface dynamics. Notable contributions include developing the 'Spiderwheel' educational apparatus and exploring sperm motility influences on hydrophobic substrates. He holds a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and contributes to institutional equality initiatives through the Departmental Equality and Diversity committee.
His publication record reflects interdisciplinary work in education, biophysics, and materials science, with recent focus on coding barriers in first-year physics students and experimental techniques for thermal expansion measurements.
