Professor Jane A. Grasby is a Professor of Biological Chemistry and School Director of One University at the University of Sheffield’s School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. She holds a BSc in Chemistry (University of Birmingham, 1988) and a PhD in Biochemistry (University of Southampton, 1992). Before her current role, she was a Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge and joined Sheffield as a Lecturer in 1994, progressing through Senior Lecturer (1999), Reader (2002), to her current position (2013).
Her research focuses on nucleic acid interactions, particularly the catalytic mechanisms of flap endonucleases (FENs) in DNA replication and repair. Techniques used include chemical synthesis, molecular biology, biophysics (fluorescence, CD, NMR), and X-ray crystallography. Key interests include how FENs achieve specificity in nucleic acid hydrolysis, with recent work on the threading mechanism of substrates through the helical arch of FEN1.
Teaching responsibilities include modules such as “Carbonyl Compounds and Carboxylic Acids,” “Chemistry in a Sustainable Future,” and “Introduction to Chemical Biology & Medicinal Chemistry.” She has also led the Skills for Success Project, emphasizing employability skills. She previously chaired the Faculty of Science Equality Diversity Committee.
