Matthew Johnson is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at West Virginia University (WVU). His research focuses on nanotechnology, encompassing material growth (e.g., molecular beam epitaxy), patterning (e.g., electron-beam lithography), and characterization techniques (e.g., scanning probe microscopy). His work addresses applications in energy materials, superconductivity, ferro-electrics, and environmental technologies. He holds the Ted and Cuba Webb Presidential Professorship and has received the NSF CAREER Award and Vice-President for Research Award for Outstanding Research Engagement.
Education:
- BSc in Physics from the University of Waterloo (NSERC Science Scholar)
- MS in Physics and PhD in Applied Physics from California Institute of Technology (Millikan and IBM Fellowships)
Research Interests:
- Design and control of quantum many-body phenomena in solids
- Emergent material behaviors under stimuli like magnetic fields and laser pulses
- Development of advanced fabrication and characterization tools for nanoscale materials
