Dr. Matt Jenkins is an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York, specializing in buildings archaeology and urban landscapes. He transitioned from a 12-year career as a journalist at The Independent to pursue archaeology, completing a BA, MA in Buildings Archaeology, and a PhD at York. His research focuses on urban environments, particularly Georgian York and London, emphasizing the interplay between architecture, social practices, and material culture.

Research interests include the long eighteenth century, medieval architectural reuse, and the biographies of buildings. His doctoral work challenged assumptions about urban modernity by analyzing housing, shopping, and mixed architectural character in York. Current collaborations with English Heritage explore Georgian London using their Architectural Study Collection.
Teaching includes undergraduate modules on historic houses and field archaeology, as well as postgraduate courses on domestic interiors and interpreting historic buildings. External activities include consultancy for English Heritage and Fairfax House Museum.
