Dr. John Jenkins is a Teaching Fellow and Research Associate in the Department of History at the University of York, where he serves as Assistant Director of the Centre for Pilgrimage Studies. He holds degrees from Oxford (BA, DPhil) and London (MA), researching cathedral shrines from medieval times to present.
His work examines how English cathedrals curated sacred spaces for pilgrims, with focus on Thomas Becket's cult. He co-organized 'Becket 2020' anniversary events and created digital reconstructions of Canterbury Cathedral's medieval shrine featured by BBC and Smithsonian.
Dr. Jenkins edits the 1428 'Customary of the Shrine of St Thomas Becket' and investigates lay participation in medieval cathedrals. He has published on pilgrimage replication, London's adoption of Becket as patron saint, and Westminster Cathedral's cultural memory.
