Dr. Matias Ramirez is a Reader in Science, Technology, and Innovation at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) within the University of Sussex Business School. His research focuses on transformative innovation policy (TIP), emphasizing social inclusion and sustainability in the Global South. He co-directs the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) and coordinates the Latin America Hub of TIPC, collaborating with policymakers and academic partners to design inclusive innovation frameworks.
His work examines how policies travel across diverse geographies and cognitive spaces, integrating informal sectors and splintered infrastructures into sustainability transitions. Recent projects include a three-year initiative with Panama’s science agency (SENACYT) and contributions to SDG-aligned policy experiments in Latin America.
Key publications explore policy translations, social movements’ roles in urban sustainability, and the inclusion of small-scale producers in agricultural clusters. He has secured grants from organizations like VINNOVA and the British Council, and served on editorial boards including Work, Employment, and Society.
Ramirez teaches transformative innovation policy modules at the MSc level and advises on policy design for equitable transitions. His awards include the Innovations that Inspire Prize (2021) and recognition for collaborative research in the Latin American and Caribbean TIPC Hub.
