معرفی
Matias Perez is an Affiliate Researcher at the University of Glasgow's School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine. He holds a DVM from Buenos Aires University and a PhD in Veterinary Medicine, focusing on helminth parasites and their molecular interactions with hosts. As a Royal Society Newton International Fellow (2021), he investigates how parasitic helminths modulate host environments through microRNAs (miRNAs), with applications in developing treatments for neglected diseases. His research emphasizes gastrointestinal organoids as in vitro platforms to study host-parasite interactions without animal use.
Education:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Buenos Aires University
- PhD in Veterinary Medicine, Buenos Aires University
Research Interests: Dr. Perez's work centers on helminth-derived miRNAs and extracellular vesicles, particularly their roles in immune modulation. His studies aim to identify miRNA-based therapeutics for parasitic and gastrointestinal diseases. Key themes include:
- Parasite-host molecular communication
- MiRNA-driven immune suppression
- Organoid models for disease research
Advising & Grants:
- Co-supervises MVM students researching miRNAs in anal sac adenocarcinoma and epilepsy biomarkers
- Guides Honours students on organoid-based host-parasite studies
- Collaborates with institutions like UADE (Argentina) on parasite in vitro cultivation
Labs & Teams: Active in the University of Glasgow's Veterinary Research and Comparative & Translational Health groups, focusing on One Health approaches to parasitic diseases.
