Mathieu Duplay is Professor of American Literature at Paris Diderot University since 2011, previously holding the same position at University of Lille 3 from 2003-2011. He serves as Co-director of doctoral programs for the French Association for American Studies, elected member of Doctoral School 131 council, and elected member of LARCA council (UMR 8225).
His research focuses on the interdisciplinary intersection of literature, theater, and music in the United States and English-speaking Canada, with particular attention to the stage works of composer John Adams and the relationship between literature and music in North American poetry and fiction. His work explores the boundaries of the literary, with special interest in transcendentalist writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Duplay's scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with American musical theater, opera studies, and the intersection of literature with musical composition. His publications demonstrate expertise in analyzing how literary texts interact with musical compositions, particularly in operatic contexts. His research spans from historical transcendentalist philosophy to contemporary composers like John Adams, Steve Reich, and Stephen Sondheim.
