Mathias Hatleskog Tjønn is a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Social Research (ISF) in Oslo, affiliated with the NORMS-project. He holds an MPhil in Modern International and Transnational History from the University of Oslo (2019). His research focuses on migrant return policies, migration, colonial history, and European contemporary history, with regional expertise in Italy, Libya, and Norway.
Education: MPhil in Modern International and Transnational History (University of Oslo, 2019).
Research interests include postcolonial geopolitics, migration control mechanisms, and the historical interplay between colonialism and modern state policies. Specific studies examine Libya’s colonial economic history, Italy-Libya relations, and the Mediterranean migration crisis.
Awards: HIFOs Fritt Ord Scholarship and Babylon-prize (both 2020). Professional roles include serving as PhD-representative on the board of the Norwegian Research School in History (NRSH). Previously worked as a research assistant at PRIO (Peace Research Institute Oslo).
Key projects: NORMS-project on deportation norms, and contributions to studies on energy geopolitics and postcolonial migration control. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy debates around migration and colonial legacies.
