Ida Roland Birkvad

Ida Roland Birkvad is an LSE Fellow in the Department of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She holds a PhD from Queen Mary, University of London, where her doctoral research was supported by the Leverhulme Trust and supervised by Professor Kimberly Hutchings. Prior to her academic career, she worked at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), focusing on South Asia, migration, international security, and minority politics.

Her research expertise spans postcolonial theory, gender and sexuality studies, and South Asian studies. She critically examines intersections of race, caste, class, and colonial histories, challenging Eurocentric narratives by emphasizing the agency of the colonial periphery in shaping modern political thought. Her interdisciplinary work draws from South Asian anti-caste critiques and transfeminist frameworks, interrogating how marginalized identities are represented in international relations theory.

Recipient of the 2023-24 LSE Class Teacher Award, Ida has over ten years of teaching experience across institutions including LSE, QMUL, SOAS, and the University of Oslo. She is co-convenor of the IR502 International Relations Theory/Area/History Research Workshop for the 2024/25 session. Despite her academic prominence, she is currently unavailable to supervise MPhil/PhD students.
