Mathias Ernst serves as Professor at the Institute of Water Resources and Water Supply, Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), where he leads research in critical water infrastructure domains. His work spans drinking water treatment, membrane processes, and sustainable water management systems with direct applications to contemporary resource challenges.
Research priorities include:
- Physico-chemical drinking water treatment methodologies
- Membrane technology development covering microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis
- Fouling mitigation and hybrid system optimization for dissolved organic matter retention
- Artificial groundwater recharge for indirect potable reuse
- Trace organic compound analysis and water quality parameter characterization
- Decision support frameworks for integrated water management
Current research initiatives encompass SafeRO, SafeCREW, FITWAS, KonTriSol, Suleman, and BMWi ENERWAG projects addressing real-world water treatment and recycling challenges. Professor Ernst actively contributes through the DVGW Research Centre TUHH and Forschungsgruppe BIEM collaborations while maintaining teaching responsibilities across six specialized courses including Membrane Technology and Sustainable Water Management.
