Shankar Chellam is the A.P. & Florence Wiley Professor III in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University, with active research and teaching responsibilities in environmental engineering.
His research spans water purification and atmospheric aerosol science. In water systems, he pioneers membrane technologies (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis) for drinking water, wastewater, and hydraulic fracturing wastewater treatment, with emphasis on virus removal, fouling control, and electrocoagulation pretreatment. For aerosols, he specializes in elemental/isotopic characterization of trace metals (rare earth elements, platinum group metals) in PM2.5/PM10, source apportionment of particulate matter, and long-range dust transport mechanisms.
Dr. Chellam leads a highly collaborative research group involving microbiologists, chemical engineers, mathematicians, medical doctors, and Earth scientists. His team includes postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students, master's students, and undergraduate researchers working on interdisciplinary environmental challenges.
