Mathew Schmalz is a Professor of Religious Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, specializing in Global Catholicism, Hinduism, and New Religious Movements. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1998) and a B.A. from Amherst College (1987). His research explores intersections between religion, culture, and identity, with particular attention to Catholicism's global expansion and its engagement with non-Christian traditions. Schmalz has authored over 100 academic works, co-edited major volumes like Engaging South Asian Religions, and founded the Journal of Global Catholicism.
His scholarly contributions span topics including Dalit Christian theology in India, Mormon-Catholic dialogue, and papal leadership dynamics. Awards include the Fulbright Fellowship and Thomas J.
