Jo Renee Formicola is a Professor of Political Science at Seton Hall University’s Department of Political Science and Public Affairs within the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on religion and government, church-state relations, and the impact of clerical sexual abuse on institutional dynamics. She holds a BS from Le Moyne College, an MA from Georgetown University, and a PhD from Drew University.
Her work examines the intersection of religious institutions, political power, and legal frameworks, with a particular emphasis on the Catholic Church’s evolving role in civil society. Recent publications analyze papal policies on sexual abuse crises, U.S. Catholic Church-state relations post-abuse scandals, and the political implications of moral values in governance.
Her articles consistently address themes like papal governance, church accountability, and globalization’s challenges to religious institutions. Notably, she has contributed to debates on modern Catholicism’s societal influence and its adaptation to contemporary legal and ethical landscapes.
Formicola has served as an editor for several academic volumes and special editions, including Catholic Church-State Relations in Global Transition. Her media contributions span interviews on topics such as the Biden presidency, clerical abuse, and the Vatican’s political engagements. Courses taught include “Engaging the World: Catholics in the Political Process” and “Law, Society, Church and State in the U.S.”
