Peter C. Phan serves as the inaugural Ignacio Ellacuria Chair of Catholic Social Thought in Georgetown University's Department of Theology and Religious Studies and holds a faculty fellowship at the Berkley Center. A globally recognized theologian, his work bridges academic scholarship with practical engagement in religious pluralism and social justice initiatives, including collaborations with the Vatican and Pope Francis on culture of encounter projects.
Phan earned three doctorates and has produced over 30 books and 300 essays translated into 14 languages including Arabic, Chinese, and Vietnamese. His research spans Orthodox icon theology, patristics, eschatology, and the history of Christian missions in Asia, with particular emphasis on liberation theology, inculturation processes, and interreligious dialogue frameworks. He pioneered studies on Asian Pacific Catholicism's evolution within globalization dynamics and migration contexts.
His publication trajectory reveals a consistent focus on transforming religious boundaries, analyzing how Catholicism adapts to global migration patterns and intercultural encounters. Recent works examine Pope Francis' vision for universal fraternity while advancing theological models for cross-cultural religious engagement beyond Western paradigms.
Scientific recognition includes:
- John Courtney Murray Award (2010) - Catholic Theological Society of America's highest honor
- Presidency of both the Catholic Theological Society of America and American Theological Society as first non-Anglo leader
Phan directs major research initiatives including the 'Catholicism and Globalization' project and 'Ecclesiological Investigations Network,' fostering interdisciplinary analysis of ecclesial structures in transnational contexts. His teaching and public scholarship address contemporary challenges in religious pluralism through courses like 'Christianity and Other Religions' and digital-era liturgical practices during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
