Mary Wood is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Oregon, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on medical humanities, disability studies, and 19th-20th century American literature. She explores intersections between literature and science, particularly in psychiatric contexts, and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects like the Morningside Hospital archive study.
Her work includes analyzing John Steinbeck’s engagement with psychiatry archives and Charles W. Chesnutt’s portrayal of new psychiatric practices. She also co-leads a project examining Morningside Hospital’s role in mid-20th-century Alaskan psychiatry, involving undergraduate researchers from Global Health and English.
Publications include Life Writing and Schizophrenia (2013) and The Writing on the Wall: Women’s Autobiography and the Asylum (1994). Her research integrates digital humanities methodologies and queer studies perspectives.
