William Clark is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at San Francisco State University (SFSU). His work bridges U.S. literary studies, queer studies, and critical race theory, emphasizing historical contexts of sexuality, race, gender, and nationality. Prior to SFSU, he taught at the College of William & Mary and UCLA, where he earned his Ph.D. His research explores legal and social frameworks of citizenship, particularly intersections of race and sexuality. He is authoring a book project, “Perverse Citizens: U.S. Fiction and the Conception of Queer Rights,” analyzing early 20th-century fiction’s portrayal of queer identity and citizenship.
Clark’s teaching focuses on queer literature, U.S. literature and law, and critical race theory. He holds a Ph.D. from UCLA and previously worked in the Bay Area nonprofit sector raising grants. His writing appears in Henry James Review, Nineteenth Century Literature, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. He regularly contributes essays and reviews to academic and public platforms.
