Mary Ingraham is a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Saint Mary's University. Previously, she served as Dean of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge and held roles at the University of Alberta, including leading the Sound Studies Institute. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Nottingham (1994) and degrees from Mount Allison University and the University of Victoria.
Dr. Ingraham specializes in interdisciplinary musicology, focusing on cultural studies, Indigenous knowledge preservation, and digital archiving. Her research explores intersections of ethnicity, race, gender, and spirituality in Canadian music history. Notable projects include the Resounding Culture digital portal and collaborations with the Aboriginal Multi-Media Society of Alberta (AMMSA) to preserve Indigenous audiovisual heritage.
Her work emphasizes decolonizing music narratives and fostering intercultural understanding through collaborative creative practices. She has secured funding from SSHRC, Canadian Heritage, and other agencies, and her research spans Canada’s multicultural musical landscapes, from historical operas to contemporary Indigenous-art collaborations.
In pedagogy, Ingraham investigates online music education’s impact on student engagement and critical thinking. She co-founded the Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Music in Canada Research Group and leads teams in digitization, metadata development, and culturally sensitive archiving protocols.
