Elaine Keillor is a Distinguished Research Professor Emerita at Carleton University’s School for Studies in Art and Culture, Department of Music. She holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Toronto (1976), the first woman to achieve this distinction. Her career spans over five decades as a scholar, performer, and advocate for Canadian music. Key roles include co-director of CIRCLE (Centre for Indigenous Research, Culture, Language, and Education) and principal investigator of the Canadian Musical Heritage Society.
Education highlights include an ARCT in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music (1951) and the Chappell Medal (1958) for exceptional pianistic promise. Awards include the Helmut Kallmann Prize (2004), SOCAN Excellence Award (2013), and recognition as one of Canada’s 50 Ambassadors for Music.
Her research focuses on Indigenous music traditions, Canadian musical heritage, and ethnomusicology. Notable works include the Encyclopedia of Native American Music (2013) and John Weinzweig: The Radical Romantic of Canada (1994). She has released over 27 recordings, championing underrepresented composers and Canadian works.
Labs/teams include leadership roles in the Canadian Musical Heritage Society and digital initiatives like native-drums.ca and native-dance.ca, documenting Indigenous musical expressions. She remains active in performance with groups like the Ottawa Bach Choir and Triolyrica.
