Mary Favret is the Allen Grossman Professor in the Department of English at Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. She specializes in British Romanticism and 18th-19th century literature, with affiliations in Women and Gender Studies. Her research explores reading practices' phenomenological challenges, war's cultural impact, and race in Jane Austen studies.
Her work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary inquiry through projects like The Sensorium of Reading, examining reading's sensory and historical dimensions. Notable publications include War at a Distance (2009) and Romantic Correspondence (1993).
Teaching responsibilities include graduate and undergraduate instruction in Romantic literature and gender studies. Office hours are Wednesdays 4-5:30pm in Gilman Hall.
