Deborah Weiss is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Alabama, serving as Co-Coordinator of the English Honors Program. Her expertise spans 18th-century literature, British novels, feminist critique, and the intersections of gender with Enlightenment-era ideas. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago (2004) and a BA from Washington University (1988).
Her research focuses on how early Romantic-period women writers used themes of female madness to challenge patriarchal structures. Key works include Mad Women of Romanticism (2024) and The Female Philosopher and Her Afterlives (2017). She teaches courses on British literature surveys, Gothic novels, Jane Austen, and gender studies.
Publications analyze figures like Maria Edgeworth, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Jane Austen, exploring themes such as economic networks, national security narratives, and ethical frameworks in literature. Her work bridges literary analysis with feminist theory and historical context.
