Mary Cross is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), serving since 1999. She holds a BA from Iowa State University (1981) and an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop (1985). Her work spans poetry, short prose, and hybrid forms, with a focus on text-image intersections, video essays, and memoir. Her current project is a hybrid memoir exploring interdisciplinary narratives.
Her research interests include animal studies in creative writing, as seen in her course Workshop: Literary Animal Writing, which examines animal representation across genres. She also teaches graduate project courses for MFA candidates, emphasizing personalized creative development through active listening and critical feedback.
Publications include Rooms, Which Were People (Ohio State UP) and works in Crazyhorse, The Sun, and American Poetry Review. Her work has been anthologized in City of the Big Shoulders and City Creatures. Exhibitions include the Sullivan Gallery’s Faculty Projects series.
Awards include finalist recognition for the Mason Jar Press Book Prize and Stillhouse Press Contest, alongside the Helen Hooven Santmyer Poetry Fund. Cross prioritizes student-centered mentorship, guiding artists and writers across disciplines to refine their creative visions.
