Mary Beth Son, MD, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and serves as Clinical Chief of Immunology, Section Chief of Rheumatology, and Director of the Samara Jan Turkel Clinical Center at Boston Children's Hospital. Her clinical and research focus centers on Kawasaki disease and childhood systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with emphasis on therapeutic interventions and outcomes.
Son has played a key role in developing the 2024 ACR guidelines for lupus nephritis management. Her recent research examines sex differences in juvenile idiopathic arthritis, the impact of neighborhood opportunity on lupus outcomes, and strategies to address COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Black patients with rheumatologic conditions. She has demonstrated that adjunctive corticosteroid therapy improves outcomes for Kawasaki disease patients with coronary artery aneurysms at diagnosis.
As program director, Son oversees rheumatology services and training at Boston Children's. She completed medical training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and fellowship in pediatric rheumatology at Boston Children's Hospital/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
