Dr. Mary Benbow is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba, affiliated with the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. She holds a Senior Fellow position at St. John's College. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Climate Modeling and GIS (University of Liverpool, 1991) and a BA in Geography (University of Liverpool, 1986).
Her research focuses on the social, cultural, and environmental roles of zoos and aquariums, exploring human-animal relationships through critical cartography, zoo visitor behavior, and family leisure dynamics. She contributed to the interpretive design of Assiniboine Park Zoo's 'Journey to Churchill' exhibit. Her work bridges animal geographies, heritage studies, and climate change communication.
Publications highlight themes such as zoo maps as cultural texts, family photography in zoos, and polar bears in climate change narratives. These contributions underscore the intersection of public spaces, conservation, and human-environment interactions.
