Mary Anne Kenny is an Associate Professor in the School of Law and Criminology at Murdoch University, part of the College of Law, Arts and Social Sciences. She holds affiliations with the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW and is a Principal Research Fellow at Murdoch’s Indo-Pacific Research Centre. Her work focuses on human rights, refugee law, and the intersection of mental health with legal systems.
Education: PhD in Law (University of South Australia, 2017–2024), Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Jurisprudence (University of Western Australia, 1987–1992), and an LLM (University of Iowa, 1994–1995).
Research emphasizes refugee status determination, mental health impacts of immigration detention, and policy reforms. Notable contributions include critiques of Australia’s offshore processing, advocacy for family reunification, and trauma-informed legal practices.
- Awards: Vice Chancellor’s Excellence in Research (2018), Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation (2018), and Pro-Vice Chancellor’s Team Award (2012).

She served as Commissioner (2006–2012) and Chair (2009–2012) of Western Australia’s Law Reform Commission, shaping legal frameworks. Her writing spans academic journals and public policy analyses, addressing urgent issues like the ‘legacy caseload’ and child rights in asylum processes.
