Dr. Martine Dennie is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law (Robson Hall). She holds a PhD in progress at the University of Calgary, funded by SSHRC and Sport Canada, focusing on participant liability and compensation for injured hockey players. Her interdisciplinary work bridges law, sociology, and sport studies. Dennie earned a BA in Law and Justice from Laurentian University, a JD from Université de Moncton, and an MA in Sociology from Laurentian University.
Her research emphasizes sport law, empirical legal studies, and multiculturalism in hockey. Key topics include legal complexities of sports injuries, racial dynamics in hockey culture, and Canadian national identity through sport. She previously taught at the University of Calgary in Sociology, Law and Society, and Kinesiology, offering courses like 'Sociology of Sport' and 'Socio-Legal Issues in Sports.'
Her grants include SSHRC and Sport Canada support for doctoral research. She co-edited a special issue on hockey and multiculturalism in the Canadian Ethnic Studies Journal and has published on hockey violence, legal standards in recreational sports, and intersectional analyses of sport.
