Martin Tanis

Dr. Martin Tanis is an Associate Professor in Communication Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, serving as director of the bachelor's and master's programs in Communication Science. He holds affiliations with the Network Institute and the Communication Choices, Content and Consequences (CCCC) research group. His work focuses on online social behavior, with specialties in health communication and group-based phenomena through a Social Identity lens. Research spans private (impression formation), organizational (commitment/identification), and public (hostile media perception) spheres.

He has published widely in Communication and Social Psychology journals, including Journal of Communication, Journal of Health Communication, and European Journal of Social Psychology. Recent studies address verified source credibility on social media, religious organizations' Twitter strategies, and cyber aggression interventions in messaging apps like WhatsApp.

As Principal Investigator, he led the Dutch participant recruitment platform for SSH research (2020–2024). Teaching includes Introduction to Communication Science and New Media Challenges. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to quality education and responsible consumption.
