Ivar Vermeulen

Dr. Ivar Vermeulen is an Associate Professor in Communication Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences, Network Institute, and Communication Choices, Content and Consequences (CCCC) research group. He holds roles as Research Manager of the Communication Science department and co-Director of the Digital Media & Behaviour Lab. He earned his PhD in 2003 from the University of Amsterdam's Institute for Logic, Language, and Information.

His research focuses on persuasion dynamics, particularly disinformation and radical effects, trust in digital contexts, and neuropsychological testing methodologies. Notable projects include replication studies of classic communication experiments, applications of music in persuasion, and automated detection of online aggression. He emphasizes rigorous research practices, including developing ethical participant recruitment platforms for social sciences.

Teaching responsibilities include courses on marketing communication, research integrity, and media psychology. His work addresses societal challenges like misinformation, hate speech, and health communication, reflecting contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and responsible consumption.

Research collaborations span interdisciplinary teams addressing cognitive impairment detection, online behavior analysis, and media literacy interventions. He has supervised numerous MSc theses and contributed to over 60 scholarly publications, emphasizing experimental methods and digital media impact.
