Prof. Dr. Martin Schulze Wessel holds the Chair of Eastern and Southeastern European History at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) since 2003. His research spans Eastern European history (18th century onwards), Russo-Ukrainian relations, religious cultures in Central/Eastern Europe, and Cold War science. He leads major DFG-funded projects like the Collegium Carolinum and the DFG Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies, securing over €20 million in third-party funding.

- Leadership: Director of DFG Kolleg Research Group on Universalism vs. Particularism in Contemporary Europe (2022–), Director of Collegium Carolinum (2004–), Co-Founder of German-Ukrainian Historical Commission (2014–2021)
His peer-reviewed publications focus on revolutionary cycles, imperial transitions, and memory politics. Key themes include the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission and initiatives like the International Master's in Eastern European Studies, which he designed and which has graduated 330 students. He supervises 13 ongoing PhD projects and 31 completed ones. Awards include the Richard von Weizsäcker Fellowship (2021/22), Bavarian Academy of Sciences (2008), and VolkswagenStiftung research grants.
