Prof. Dr. Martin Aust is a Principal Investigator at the University of Bonn, holding the Professorship for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe and Russia. His academic affiliations include the Institute of History and the Department of Eastern European History, where he contributes to establishing a European forum on Premodern Russian History.
- Education: Habilitation (2008) and Ph.D. (2002) in Eastern European and Russian History, Free University Berlin; M.A. (1998) in Modern History, Eastern and Southeastern European History, and Political Science, University of Hanover and Free University Berlin.
Aust’s research spans politics, society, and religion in premodern Russia, focusing on multi-layered dependency structures and forced labor under German occupation. His work connects colonial exploitation, National Socialism, and memory cultures in Eastern Europe and Germany.
His recent publications analyze imperial legacies, Russia-Ukraine relations, and global historiography, reflecting his expertise in long-term historical dynamics. He has supervised 35 theses and contributed to academic debates on cultural transfers and comparative history.
