Martin Olszynski serves as Associate Professor and Chair in Energy, Resources and Sustainability at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law. Previously counsel with the federal Department of Justice (2007-2013) focusing on environmental and natural resources law at Fisheries and Oceans Canada, he clerked for the Federal Court of Appeal after law school.
His research centers on environmental, natural resources, and water law with specific expertise in environmental assessment, adaptive management, ecosystem services valuation, land-use planning, and climate change litigation. Recent publications analyze landmark cases including the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act reference and Impact Assessment Act jurisprudence.
His 2023-2024 publications reveal intensifying focus on Canadian climate policy implementation gaps and financial security mechanisms for resource extraction. Work consistently bridges theoretical legal frameworks with empirical analysis of regulatory outcomes, particularly regarding interprovincial pipeline regulation and science-policy interfaces.
He currently serves on the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada's advisory council on impact assessment and has testified before parliamentary committees and the Supreme Court of Canada.
