Professor Nickie Nikolaou is a distinguished faculty member at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law, specializing in Energy Law, Natural Resources Law, Environmental Law, Taxation Law, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). She joined the Faculty in 2007 and served as Associate Dean (Academic) from 2016-2021, where she implemented the Calgary Curriculum with experiential learning focus and developed innovative programs including the Certification in Common Law in French and the Foreign-Trained Lawyers Program.
Her educational background includes an LLM from the University of Calgary (2000), LLB from the University of Alberta (1996), and BA (Hons) in Political Studies and French from the University of Saskatchewan (1990). She practiced law in Calgary and served as legal counsel to the Alberta Court of Appeal prior to her academic career.
Professor Nikolaou's research examines critical intersections of energy development, environmental protection, and taxation, with particular focus on regulatory frameworks, liability regimes, human rights implications, and municipal roles in resource management. Her Scholarship of Teaching and Learning work advances experiential legal education methodologies and assessment practices.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates consistent scholarly contribution across energy law, environmental regulation, and legal pedagogy. Recent works analyze oil sands regulatory frameworks, wind power governance, hydraulic fracturing health impacts, and innovative teaching approaches that develop "whole advocates" through experiential learning.
