Martin Luther (1483–1546) was a German Professor of Theology at the University of Wittenberg, renowned for initiating the Protestant Reformation. His 1517 publication of the 95 Theses challenged Church practices, particularly the sale of indulgences. Though traditionally depicted as nailing the Theses to Wittenberg’s Castle Church door, historical evidence suggests this act was likely performed by subordinates, reflecting standard scholarly procedures of the time. Luther’s theological critiques and later writings laid the foundation for Protestantism, dividing Western Christianity.
His academic work centered on theological reform, emphasizing scriptural authority over papal doctrine. Despite becoming a pivotal figure in religious history, his formal role remained within the Catholic Church until his excommunication in 1521.
Luther’s legacy includes foundational texts like 95 Theses and later works on justification by faith. His actions sparked debates over religious authority and ignited broader societal transformations, though his direct involvement in the symbolic “nailing” event remains debated.
