معرفی
Professor Martin Llewelyn is a Professor (Honorary Consultant) of Infectious Diseases at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and holds an honorary contract at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. He specializes in healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance, focusing on pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile. His research integrates microbial genome sequencing and antibiotic stewardship strategies. Llewelyn has led major initiatives such as the Antibiotic Reduction and Conservation in Hospitals (ARK-Hospital) trial and collaborates with groups like the International Staphylococcus Aureus Collaboration. He teaches infectious diseases, microbiology, and immunology to undergraduate medical students at BSMS.
Education: MB BS (1992, Royal London Hospital), PhD in Human Immunology (Imperial College London, 2004), and postgraduate certifications including FRCP (2007) and DTMH (2003).
Research Interests: His work spans microbial genomics, antibiotic optimization, and infection control. Key areas include using whole-genome sequencing to study S. aureus transmission and developing strategies to reduce hospital antibiotic use. He has contributed to national and international guidelines, including the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) guidelines on Staphylococcus aureus Bacteraemia.
Grants and Leadership: Llewelyn has secured funding from the NIHR, MRC, and Wellcome Trust. He chairs the Royal College of Physicians Joint Specialty Committee on Infectious Diseases and serves on the Department of Health’s Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Prescribing and Resistance.
Teaching: He supervises medical students in clinical and laboratory research projects and teaches foundational microbiology and advanced infectious disease management.
