Mark A Holmes is Professor in Microbial Genomics & Veterinary Science at the University of Cambridge's Department of Veterinary Medicine. He directs the Cambridge Infectious Disease Consortium Outreach Program and serves as Director of Studies in Clinical Veterinary Medicine at Churchill College. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Veterinary Immunology (1989), M.A. (1986), Vet.M.B. (1985), and B.A. in Medical Sciences and Computer Science (1982), all from Cambridge.
His research integrates microbial genomics, epidemiology, and veterinary science, with emphasis on antimicrobial resistance (e.g., MRSA in livestock), pathogen evolution, and vaccine development. He employs genomic sequencing, bioinformatics, and molecular epidemiology to study bacterial pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus. Key interdisciplinary themes span zoonotic transmission, immunopathogenesis, and livestock health.
Awards:
- Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS)
- Wellcome Trust Veterinary Research Training Scholarship (1986–1989)
Grants & Leadership: Secured over £3.5M in funding (e.g., MRC, Royal Society, Newton Trust) for projects on AMR dynamics, MRSA genomics, and novel antibiotics. Supervised 8 Ph.D. students. Leads the Cambridge Infectious Diseases Consortium and collaborates globally, including UK-China AMR initiatives and African antimicrobial resistance studies.
Affiliations: Collaborates with Cambridge’s Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Infectious Diseases, working alongside Prof. Julian Parkhill (genomics), Prof. Sharon Peacock (pathogen biology), and veterinary immunology experts. His lab focuses on genomic surveillance of bacterial infections in animals and humans.
