Professor Mark Holmes is a Principal Investigator at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, where he serves as Head of Department and Associate Dean for Research. His work focuses on microbial genomics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and molecular epidemiology, particularly through the discovery and study of livestock-associated MRSA strains.
Research highlights include leading the NEOSTAR project on agricultural and human antibiotic resistance interactions, collaborating with the DETECTIVE consortium in Chinese hospitals, and developing a Hi-C metagenomics pipeline to analyze AMR gene dynamics in microbiomes. His studies span dairy cows, pigs, and chickens under varying antibiotic exposure conditions.
He has contributed to understanding the biology and evolution of mecC MRSA, including its differential resistance to cephalosporins. Funding for his work comes from Defra, the MRC, and other major research councils. The Department of Veterinary Medicine, part of the School of Biological Sciences, is his primary affiliation.
