Andrew Grant is a University Associate Professor in Microbial Pathogenesis at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Jesus College. He serves as Director of Studies in Veterinary Sciences at Jesus College and specializes in functional genomics and genomics of bacterial pathogens.
Dr. Grant earned his BSc in Biochemistry and Pharmacology (1997) and PhD (2001), both from the University of Southampton. His educational background provided the foundation for his current research in microbial pathogenesis and bacterial genomics.
Dr. Grant's research focuses on bacterial pathogens of veterinary and clinical importance, with particular emphasis on Salmonella and Campylobacter species. His laboratory employs genomic and functional genomic approaches combined with advanced molecular, proteomic, and microscopy techniques, often integrated with mathematical and statistical models. This multidisciplinary approach allows his team to determine how bacterial pathogens survive in the environment, colonize their hosts, and cause disease, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic approaches.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on foodborne pathogens, particularly Campylobacter jejuni and Salmonella species. His work spans from basic genomic characterization to understanding pathogen-host interactions and antimicrobial resistance. His research often involves collaborations with international teams and employs both in vitro and in vivo models to study bacterial fitness and pathogenesis.
Dr. Grant maintains an active research program with numerous publications in high-impact journals including PLoS One, Scientific Reports, and the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. His collaborative approach is evident from the extensive co-author networks across his publications.
As Director of Studies in Veterinary Sciences at Jesus College, Dr. Grant plays an important role in mentoring and guiding veterinary students through their academic journey at Cambridge. His research has significant implications for food safety, antimicrobial resistance, and the development of novel interventions against bacterial pathogens.
